John Jefferson Musgrove

BORN 1866 - DIED 1944

John Jefferson (JJ) Musgrove, Son of John Mattison (Matt) Musgrove, son of John Willis Simeon (JW) Musgrove, son of William Thomas Musgrove, son of John Thomas Musgrove Jr., son of John Thomas Musgrove Sr., son of Cuthbert Musgrove "The Mariner"

JJ Musgrove was a promonant member of the Soso Community. He married Rebecca Carolyn Cooper (1866-1928) and they had seven children, three girls: Beulha, Norma & Maude and four boys: Rufus, Alonzo, Leon & Claude. Soon after the death of Rebecca in July 1928, JJ married her younger sister Seleta Ancibelle Cooper (1869-1955).

JJ's old house

JJ owned land on both sides of Hwy 20 (Hwy 28), beginning from about where J.P. Parker Road is today, to near Soso as well as a couple parcels Northwest of Soso. Upon his death the much of the land was divided among the seven children. For decades the seven families have come together on the 4th of July for a Family Reunion. I found some old 8mm movies of three of the late 1960s reunions and although poor quality you might still be able to recoginize many who have gone on before us. If you look closely you will find most of the seven brothers and sisters in these videos. The year or each is a best guestimate based on Joni's age at the time the film was taken.

Decendents of JJ

Rufus Larkin Musgrove
Uncle Rufus
Rufus Larkin Musgrove
(1888 - 1968)

Rufus was the first born of the JJ Musgrove family. Rufus grew up tall all and lean with a strong work ethic. In 1916 he married Margaret Edith (Maggie) Windham (1891-1971) and they had a large family of four boys and three girls. Rufus and Maggie had very strong ties to their church and to god and they instilled the importance of having god in your life in their children. He inherited the land on the east side of Hwy 28 from where Claudes land ended and continued northward towards Soso to where Beulha's land started. Click on the picture to view Rufus' family.

William Alonzo Musgrove
Uncle Alonzo
William Alonzo Musgrove
(1890 - 1958)

Alonzo, the second son of JJ was also a tall, lean, hard worker who put his faith in god. Alonzo married Elma Leona Knight (1893 - 1989). He inherited a plot of land across Hwy 28 from his brother Claude, built his house facing JP Parker Road and he and Elma began their family. They had a large family with six boys and six girls. Alonza was a busy bee. Click on his picture to view Alonzo's family.

Beulha Rose Musgrove
Aunt Beulha
(1892 - 1971)
Beulha Rose Musgrove

I don't know much about Beulha Rose other than I saw her afew times and I had my picture taken with her at JJ's old homeplace. Beulha inherited the land on both sides of Hwy 28 from where Rufus' ends to just above where Johnny Musgrove currently lives. She had a house on the east side of the highway. Claude would farm her land around the old house. I remember tagging along with him when he planted and harvested corn. I would like to talk to Sonny (her grandson) and get more details

Uncle Leon
Samuel Leon Musgrove
(1896 - 1986)

Leon's land northwest of Soso on an old dirt road. I'm sure it has a name by now but I don't know it. Leon married Nannie Green (1896-?), sister to Mattie Green, Claude's wife. Leon and Nan's land was near or adjoining the Green homestead where the girls grew up. They had a pecan orchard across the road from their house. They had four children, Ellis, Casford, Kirmit, and Undean (not sure on the spelling).

Granddaddy
Claude Floyd Musgrove
(1901 - 1972)

Claude the youngest son of JJ was full of mischief and always liked being photographed. He is almost always seen with a hat on his head or in his hand and always featuring his best pose for the camera. His land started at J.P. Parker Road on the east side of Hwy 20 (28)and coninued north to just beyond the curve. It also came with an old log house and this is where he started his family. He married Mattie Lou Green (1904-1979) and they had three children; Mildred Coneil, Mary Alene, and Jeffie Burl. Click on the picture to see Claude's family.
